Old St. Mary Church is the oldest church in Chicago, predating even
the incorporation of the city itself. This new church building,
located in an area of growth and renewal, is the sixth location
for the parish. The design's intent is to encourage reflection.
Nearing the church, the roofline pierces the horizon. Upon further
approach, the curving pre-cast walls embrace visitors. Heavy bronze
doors separate the sunlit narthex from the outdoor bustle. Parishioners
may visit the courtyard, pray in the Daily Mass Chapel, or stroll
through the ambulatory where ceramic Stations of the Cross are hung.
The main worship space has an upwardly sweeping ceiling which encourages
the eyes skyward to the heavens.
