Housed in a century old school listed on the National Historic Register,
the Center provides classrooms, art studios, banquet facilities,
office space, youth drop-in center, pre-school, and theater for
area residents. The renovation and addition were of critical importance
for the facility to continue supporting these diverse functions.
Through the architectural efforts, the parking capacity was expanded,
vehicle circulation improved, landscaping and playgrounds added,
and covered porte-cochere constructed. The additions, sensitive
to the historic fabric of the building, provided an accessible lobby,
artist studios, youth room, theater “green room” and
daycare center. Original masonry foundation walls discovered during
demolition became featured interior walls of the youth center, saving
money and adding character.
