This is one of the initial projects included in the U.S. Green Building Council's LEED Existing Building Pilot Project which focuses on the adaptation of the LEED system for buildings undergoing additions or renovations. Both floors will be remodeled, including the repair of existing finishes and the upgrade of all mechanical, lighting and plumbing systems. New plumbing fixtures will reduce the copious amount of water used by the fire station. Environmental features include high-efficiency heating and cooling, doors certified by the Forest Stewardship Council, low-wattage fluorescent lighting, low lighting power densities, low-impact housekeeping, and recycled content materials. The renovation should receive a Silver LEED EB certification. A vegetated roof helps cool the building and reduce heat island effects. An example of this type of roof is shown below.
